VICT3R - reducing animal use in toxicology research

The VICT3R project is dedicated to reducing animal use in toxicology research by developing innovative Virtual Control Groups.

grit42 plays a key role in the project by developing the platform that will contain the historic control data from animal studies and from which researchers will be able to generate virtual control groups.

About VICT3R

The VICT3R project is a public-private partnership funded by the European Innovative Health Initiative (IHI).

Revolving around the 3Rs principles - Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement - VICT3R aims to revolutionise the field by developing Virtual Control Groups (VCGs) that not only enhance scientific outcomes but also uphold higher ethical standards.

The purpose of VICT3R is threefold:

  • Significantly reduce the need for animal testing, aligning with global ethical standards.
  • Enhance the accuracy and efficiency of toxicological studies with virtual solutions.
  • Lower costs and streamline processes for research and industry partners.

Participants:

VICT3R is funded by the Innovative Health Initiative Joint Undertaking (IHI JU) and has 33 partner organizations - including 13 of the largest pharmaceutical companies, 6 academic institutions and a range of small and medium-sized enterprises, including grit42.

The project runs from 2024 to 2028.

Working towards the 3 R’s

Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement. These are the 3 R’s the VICT3R project works towards:

  • Replacing animals in control groups with virtual counterparts
  • Reducing up to 25% the overall number of animals required for such studies
  • Refining the methodologies to ensure the highest standards of ethical scientific practices.

A platform to handle vast amounts of data

Data management in VICT3R will be based on grit Scientific Data Management Platform which during the project period will be rebuilt and significantly expanded to handle the large amounts of SEND data that VICT3R is based on.

13 of the largest pharma companies in Europe will contribute with historical data about animal research and the large amount of data will allow researchers to generate virtual control groups that match their exact needs.
