Understanding the concepts of grit42

Learn about setups, parameters, experimental roles, and experiments.

Setups

Setups are at the core of the grit42 platform. They describe assay data with Raw Parameters, the data captured from a run of the assay, and Result Parameters, the data derived from data captured in the same run of the assay, in a way the system can process. Setups are templates for Experiments.

Parameters

Parameters describe individual data points of assay data with a data type (number, text, boolean, or entities such as a Species or a Compound), a unit where relevant and most importantly, the roles they play in your experiment, the Experimental Role.

Experimental role

Independent Variable (IV)

A variable where the value doesn’t depend on another variable. It is the "cause" variable. It is always graphed on the x axis. It is always listed first in an x,y table.
Examples: Could be the dose, the compound, the mouse, etc

Dependent Variable (DV)

A variable whose value depends on the independent variable. It is the "effect" variable. It is always graphed on the y axis. It is always listed second in an x,y table.
Examples: Could be the IC50, the ED50 or other “effect” or “results” of the experiment

Result set constant (Const)

A variable that you do not want changed during the experiment. You want to keep it constant. The variable would strongly influence experimental results, and it is therefore held constant during the experiment in order to test the relative relationship of the dependent and independent variables.

Examples: Specie, strain, sex will likely influence the experiment. These variables are therefore often kept constant within each experiment in order not to influence the result.

Controlled Variable (CV)

In controlled experiments, researchers randomly assign individuals (or animals) to a treatment group or control group. This is done to reduce the disturbing/interfering effect of irrelevant variables - could be body weight - that are not being studied.
In an observational study, however, researchers have no control over who receives the treatment (if there is a treatment). Instead, they must control for variables using statistics.

Experiments

Experiments are the entry point for data in the grit42 platform. They belong to a Setup and are most often created from a data set imported in the system. Experiments can have a set of Raw Data, corresponding to the Raw Parameters, and a set of Result Data, corresponding to the Result Parameters. Data in experiments can be viewed in a set of data grids and visualised in plots.
